Gaza Hospital Director Calls for Release in Israeli Supreme Court Appearance

(MENAFN) Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has appealed to Israel’s Supreme Court for his immediate release, describing his detention as “unjust and arbitrary” during his first court appearance in nearly a year.

According to reports, Abu Safiya appeared before the court via video link from his prison cell while still in handcuffs.

His lawyer, Nasser Abu Odeh, said the physician told the court, “My detention is unjust and arbitrary, and I demand my immediate release.”

Abu Safiya also described his professional role, stating, “I am a pediatrician who provides medical services and care to patients, the wounded and vulnerable people in the Gaza Strip.”

He added, “I carried out my work in accordance with international law and humanitarian standards, and my detention is unjust and arbitrary.”

Following the hearing, the lawyer said in a video statement that the court had postponed its decision on whether to extend Abu Safiya’s detention, with a ruling expected within hours or in the coming days.
