Israel Prolongs Detention of Palestinian Footballer Rand Halawani

(MENAFN) Israeli authorities have extended the detention of Palestinian women’s national football team player Rand Halawani until Friday, according to Palestinian officials on Wednesday.

The Jerusalem Governorate said Halawani was taken in for questioning on Tuesday at the Talpiot police station in West Jerusalem, after which she was detained and later presented before a court that approved an extension of her detention.

No details were provided regarding the reasons for her questioning or arrest.

Separately, the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said former national team player Natalie Abu Diya, a student at Birzeit University, was also detained on Tuesday after Israeli forces reportedly raided her home.

The PFA said the arrests are part of ongoing restrictions affecting Palestinian athletes, pointing to a recent case involving footballer Musab Abu Salem.

According to the association, Abu Salem was stopped at the Allenby Bridge crossing, questioned, and prevented from traveling to Italy with the Palestine Stars team.

The team had been scheduled to play a solidarity match against a Napoli Stars selection in support of the Palestinian people, according to Palestinian media reports.
