Israel’s Supreme Court Approves Roman Gofman as Mossad Head

(MENAFN) Israel’s Supreme Court has approved the appointment of Maj. Gen. Roman Gofman as the next director of the Mossad intelligence agency, according to reports on Monday.

According to reports, the court dismissed two petitions that had challenged his appointment, with a majority ruling by Justices Ofer Grosskopf and Alex Stein. Justice Daphne Barak-Erez issued a dissenting opinion, arguing that further review was necessary to address unresolved concerns.

The legal challenges were reportedly connected to allegations involving Gofman and the so-called Ori Elmakayes case, as cited in Israeli media coverage.

In the majority decision, Justice Grosskopf stated that the material presented to the court, including classified evidence, did not show ethical wrongdoing that would prevent Gofman from taking the position.

“The existing evidence shows that the Elmakayes affair does not place an ethical stain on Maj. Gen. Gofman’s impressive career,” Grosskopf wrote, according to The Jerusalem Post.

According to reports, the ruling was issued shortly before Gofman’s scheduled transition ceremony.

Gofman is set to formally assume leadership of the Mossad on Tuesday, succeeding outgoing director David Barnea, who has headed the agency since 2021.
