Israel Reports Death of Hezbollah Commander in Airstrike

(MENAFN) The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that Hajj Youssef Ismail Hashem, a commander in the Lebanese group Hezbollah, was killed in a strike in Beirut the previous day.

According to an Israeli army spokesperson, Hashem led Hezbollah’s "Southern Front" and was reportedly involved in confrontations with Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, as well as in launching rockets toward Israel.

No immediate statement from Hezbollah was available regarding the incident.

Since a cross-border attack by Hezbollah on March 2, Israel has conducted both airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon, despite a ceasefire that had taken effect in November 2024.

Hezbollah has responded with rocket barrages into Israel since early March, claiming the attacks are retaliation for ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon and the death of Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28.

Lebanese authorities report that at least 1,268 people have been killed and 3,750 injured as a result of Israeli operations.
