Israeli Alpinist Unit Enters Southern Lebanon for Border Operation

(MENAFN) The Israeli military announced on Sunday that its Alpinist Unit crossed from the Syrian Golan Heights into southern Lebanon for the first time to carry out a “targeted operation” along the border, according to reports.

In its statement, the army said soldiers from the Alpinist Unit, operating under the 810th Brigade, “completed a targeted operation” aimed at preventing attempts by “terror” groups to establish positions near the Lebanon border.

The operation took place in difficult mountainous terrain, with troops moving on foot through deep snow from the Hermon region (Jabal al-Sheikh) in the occupied Golan Heights toward Mount Dov (Shebaa Farms) in southern Lebanon.

The military added that its forces carried out reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and efforts to identify what it described as enemy infrastructure, leveraging the specialized skills of the mountain commando unit. No information was provided regarding potential clashes or casualties.

Israel has occupied the Syrian Golan Heights since 1967 and expanded its presence in the area following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in 2024.

The move comes amid a broader campaign, with Israel conducting airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon after a Hezbollah cross-border attack on March 2. Lebanese authorities report that 1,142 people have been killed and 3,315 wounded in the ongoing assaults.

This escalation coincides with the ongoing US-Israeli offensive on Iran, which has reportedly claimed more than 1,340 lives since Feb. 28, prompting retaliatory drone and missile strikes from Iran targeting Israel, US bases, and Gulf countries.
