Netanyahu appears in Tel Aviv court to face corruption charges

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended a session at Tel Aviv’s District Court on Tuesday to respond to charges in his ongoing corruption case.

Tuesday marked the 65th hearing in the series of trials where Netanyahu faces allegations, including in Case 4000, which accuses him of bribery involving Shaul Elovitch, a senior Bezeq telecommunications official. Reports note that Netanyahu and his family made “various demands to the Elovitch couple regarding the manner of coverage on the Walla news website."

At the start of the session, Netanyahu requested a 30-minute recess to participate in a drill via Zoom “in preparation for a potential missile attack.” Observers have pointed out that the prime minister often uses political meetings, travel, and phone calls to avoid court appearances.

Earlier this month, Netanyahu formally requested a pardon from President Isaac Herzog for his corruption charges, sparking debate over whether a pardon should require admission of guilt or political withdrawal. Netanyahu has consistently refused to admit wrongdoing and stated he will not leave politics if pardoned.

Since January, the prime minister has participated in interrogations related to corruption cases 1000, 2000, and 4000, all of which he denies. In addition, he faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants for him and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024 over alleged atrocities in Gaza, where nearly 71,000 civilians, mostly women and children, have died since October 2023.
