US, Israel, Syria Enter Early-Stage Talks
A high-ranking American official described the dialogue as "very soft preliminary discussions," indicating that the process remains in its earliest phase.
Two senior representatives from Israel confirmed that an agreement is still within the realm of possibility.
However, they pointed out that such negotiations would demand a significant amount of time, with one noting that a finalized deal is "not around the corner."
At present, the conversations are taking place among mid-ranking officials, without any current plans for a summit involving national leaders, an American representative added.
According to the report, "The US favors a gradual process that would slowly build trust and improve relations between Israel and Syria," suggesting Washington's preference for an incremental strategy to restore bilateral ties.
Nonetheless, Israel is seeking guarantees that "any talks will ultimately lead to a full peace agreement and normalization," as emphasized by a senior Israeli official.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly pursuing a step-by-step framework, beginning with an updated form of the 1974 disengagement agreement.
This pact originally laid out provisions for a buffer zone, the separation of military forces, and the exchange of prisoners of war, a senior Israeli official explained.
Israeli representatives also consider the buffer zone it currently holds and Syrian land under its control as major points of bargaining.
They insist that any territorial concessions would only be made in return for a comprehensive peace deal.
